What does Supplier Relationship Management mean?

The topic of Supplier Relationship Management is not new: it was brought to the attention of big companies in the 1980s by P. Kraljič of McKinsey.

What’s the most important trend in variant configuration?
Centralized variant configuration management is gaining more and more importance. In order to optimize processes, both in the back-end and front-end activities, a centralized solution is necessary.
Read on for some highlights on variant configuration trends.

How to manage complexity and variants is a hot topic for many manufacturing companies. Last June we attended two leading events on variant configuration in Germany: smart variant CON in Berlin and the 12th conference for variant manufacturing in St. Leon-Rot. During the events we had occasion to better understand the challenges from industry, to find out brand-new trends and also to present to other colleagues and participants our competence and experiences.
In Berlin we discussed in detail about current challenges of variant product configuration and complexity management, while in St. Leon-Rot we focused on variant management in SAP.

What does variant configuration really mean in 2019?

What we took home from this event is that we should imagine a centralized configurator, when thinking about effective variant and product configuration in 2019.
In order to better manage complexity and improve business processes, one centralized configurator should be used both to manage internal order entry or quotation systems and also for e-commerce.

It’s not anymore possible to imagine two different and separate configuration tools, one dedicated to back-end tasks, while the other to front-end activities.
As regards the back-end and modeling configuration trends, we are moving towards a “Configurator Portfolio” thinking. This means that different products/product groups and specific user touchpoints could be handled as a whole portfolio. Even if there are different configurator approaches, all is based on one central technology suite.
On the other hand, when focusing on the final user, companies should focus on the need of flexibility for a configurator always available and free from technology barriers. A multi-touchpoint approach is needed, paying attention to the increasing importance of user experience.

The wait is almost over. In less than two weeks in Berlin Smart Variant CON 2019 will start. We are ready for the now traditional annual event that brings together the leading configuration experts in the German-speaking area.

Organized by we.CONECT, the event for variant and complexity managers is now in its seventh edition. It will take place at TITANIC Chaussee in Berlin on 24th and 25th June 2019.

At the CWG Configuration Workgroup conference in Budapest, DERWID wins the “SAP User Experience Contest 2019” together with msg treorbis GmbH.

The SAP User Experience Contest 2019

DERWID has been working for years with msg treorbis to integrate a product configurator in SAP UI5 Fiori and this year SAP invited the company to participate in the UX Contest 2019.

Every year the CWG Configuration Workgroup conference brings together SAP configuration experts. This year European conference, held in Budapest, ended on Wednesday May, 22nd with the awarding of the prize for “SAP User Experience Contest 2019”.

The challenge was to create an innovative user interface for the SAP product configurator, using and exploiting the new SAP Cloud APIs with microservices for direct integration into a cloud-based SAP VC backend.

DERWID and msg treorbis have brought together energy, creativity and commitment over the past few months and have achieved the goal with the “Burger Konfigurator”.

The SAP VC configuration project of DERWID and msg treorbis

The competing project is a configurable burger with a menu based on a SAP VC configuration model. The application was created based on the organizational rules of project management, which allowed the coordination of different people, professionals and experiences from Austria, Germany and Italy.

“We set the configuration starting from an empty sandwich: the user has the possibility to choose the type of bread and then fill it with different ingredients. The hamburger customization takes place through an intuitive and user-friendly guided tour that also allows you to complete the typical menu with French fries, salad, ice cream and a drink. ” explains Horst Exenberger, DERWID’s CEO.

Moreover, the configuration experience with DERWID Product Configurator and SAP UI5 Fiori allows you to view the burger price in real time after any type of change to the hamburger or menu.

The interactive 3D product configuration and real-time visualization complete the application. This technology also makes user-friendly every complex business: it is possible to present a product to the end customer quickly and immediately.
